The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago

Welcome to the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, an enduring symbol of Hindu spirituality and cultural heritage in the heart of the Midwest USA. The Temple sits atop a hillock in the suburbs of Lemont, Illinois, approximately 28 miles from downtown Chicago. Accessible within a comfortable drive from both O'Hare and Midway airports, it offers a serene retreat amidst the natural beauty of its elevated setting.
Established in 1986, our temple has flourished as a cornerstone of the Hindu community, fostering a sense of belonging and reverence for over three decades. The temple offers religious rituals, services, cultural festivities, and educational initiatives throughout the year. From daily pujas to annual festivals and children programs, our temple serves as a dynamic hub for spiritual growth, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago serves as a sacred abode for multiple deities. The temple holds the esteemed honor of being the oldest temple dedicated to Lord Rama in the United States.
The temple campus features two prominent structures, each distinguished by its unique architectural style. The main temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, is built based on Chola style of architecture. Characterized by its grandeur and intricacy, the Chola style is renowned for its towering gopurams (entrance towers), elaborately sculpted walls, and finely detailed carvings. The second structure, the Ganesha-Shiva-Durga Temple showcases the elegant charm of Kalinga architecture. Originating from the eastern region of India, Kalinga style is characterized by its distinctive features, including curved roofs, sculpted toranas (arched gateways), and intricately carved pillars.
